China sends its defense minister to Russia

The Washington Examiner reports that China is sending its defense minister to Russia.

This is the latest show of solidarity between China and Russia, two American enemies who appear to have grown much closer under the administration of President Joe Biden.

"New progress"

This week, it was announced that Li Shangfu, the defense minister of China, will be heading to Russia this upcoming week.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Tan Kefei released a statement on the matter on Friday.

He said:

New progress has been made in strategic communication, joint exercises and training, and pragmatic cooperation. These have continuously enriched the strategic connotations of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.

Bloomberg News reports that "Russia’s Defense Ministry said the two officials will discuss military cooperation and global and regional security."

Background

Perhaps significant is the fact that this is the first time that China sent its defense minister to Russia since Russia invaded Ukraine.

In response to this invasion, America and other Western nations have targeted Russia in various ways, including with sanctions. Russia responded by turning to China, and it appears that, overall, the strategy has caused China and Russia to grow much closer than they were before the invasion.

One of the most conspicuous signs of this growing relationship occurred in March when Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During that meetup, Xi said that China "highly values the relationship" with Russia.

As part of this new relationship, China appears to be helping the Russians out on the battlefield against Ukraine. It also appears that China and Russia are finding ways to allow free trading between their two countries.

Foreign policy failure

This situation is starting to look like a massive foreign policy failure by Biden and allied nations.

The Examiner put it this way:

U.S. and European officials have worked over the last year to deter China from arming Russia for the war in Ukraine, but Russia and China have signaled their mutual frustration with the United States and its allies in Europe and the Indo-Pacific amid signs that the Russian military is increasingly dependent on supply chains that trace back to China.

In other words, Biden is helping to unite America's enemies, and that has to be bad news not only for America but for the world in general.

With Biden at the helm, disaster really does appear to be looming on the world stage.
