Democrat congressman facing backlash over post-election transgender sports controversy

The resounding nature of Donald Trump's electoral win last week has prompted some on the left to do some serious soul-searching about why the Democrats' message was insufficient to persuade sufficient numbers of American voters to their cause.

However, it appears that not every liberal has gotten the message, considering the backlash Democrat Rep. Seth Moulton (MA) has received over recent, commonsense remarks about transgender athletes in girls' sports, with one top aide going so far as to resign in protest, as Breitbart reports.

Moulton offers election post-mortem

While conducting some post-election analysis of why his party lost, Moulton spoke to the New York Times on Thursday and engaged in some refreshing self-reflection.

“Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face,” the congressman acknowledged.

Moulton continued, “I have two little girls. I don't want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat, I'm supposed to be afraid to say that.”

Backlash commences

As The Hill reported, it was not long before the lawmaker began to experience noteworthy repercussions for simply speaking his mind on the current state of his party.

On the same day Moulton spoke to the Times, Matt Chilliak, the congressman's campaign manager and director of his “Serve America” committee, resigned in protest.

Though Chilliak did not comment publicly on Moulton's statement, he had already expressed his outrage over Trump's win, writing on X, “Millions of Americans today showed that they hate immigrants and transgender people more than they fear fascism.”

Chilliak was not alone in his frustration with Moulton, however, with Salem, Massachusetts, Mayor Dominick Pangallo saying that the congressman's comments “do not reflect our values.”

State Rep. Manny Cruz piled on, saying on X that Moulton “has been doubling down on his transphobic views” and adding that he should “apologize and tell us your plans to protect vulnerable populations instead of joining in the crackdown led by @realDonaldTrump.”

Congressman, others stand firm

Moulton, for his part, seems unwilling to bow to the pressure, however, stating in a Monday radio interview with GBH in Boston that “We as Democrats are more concerned about offending people and just getting all our words right than actually having legitimate, serious debates about issues that matter.”

He continued, “And I hate to say it, but if you look at exit polls...the number one issue for swing voters who chose Trump was actually the feeling that Kamala was more concerned about trans issues than the middle class. So we ignore this at our peril.”

Though it may not seem to be the case in Massachusetts, other Democratic Party insiders are seeing precisely the same things Moulton is, including Democrat Rep. Tom Suozzi (NY), who said that folks on his side of the aisle need to “stop pandering to the far left” and noted, “I don't want to discriminate against anybody, but I don't think biological boys should be playing in girls' sports. Democrats aren't saying that, and they should be.”

Longtime Hillary Clinton confidant Philippe Reines agrees, saying Friday on CNN, “Most Democrats I know think, frankly, that males at birth should not play women's sports and vice versa,” also lamenting, “I don't like the fact that a small portion of our party is pretty much dictating where we are,” but whether these realizations by a few will translate into a wholesale adjustment ahead of the 2026 midterm election cycle, only time will tell.
