DOGE head Elon Musk looks to cut funding for Planned Parenthood
Elon Musk and his colleagues in the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are looking to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood.
This is according to the piece that Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy recently published in the Wall Street Journal.
The article gave Americans a preview of what to expect from DOGE.
Planned Parenthood has already responded to the possibility, suggesting that Musk and Ramaswamy have crossed a line.
The details
Musk and Ramaswamy, in their op-ed, did not try to hide the fact that they may be coming for places like Planned Parenthood.
They wrote:
Skeptics question how much federal spending DOGE can tame through executive action alone. They point to the 1974 Impoundment Control Act, which stops the president from ceasing expenditures authorized by Congress. Mr. Trump has previously suggested this statute is unconstitutional, and we believe the current Supreme Court would likely side with him on this question.
Musk and Ramaswamy went on to name Planned Parenthood by name.
They continued:
But even without relying on that view, DOGE will help end federal overspending by taking aim at the $500 billion plus in annual federal expenditures that are unauthorized by Congress or being used in ways that Congress never intended, from $535 million a year to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and $1.5 billion for grants to international organizations to nearly $300 million to progressive groups like Planned Parenthood.
This was enough to yield a response from Planned Parenthood.
"Wreaking havoc"
Alexis McGill Johnson, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, released a statement on the matter.
McGill Johnson said:
President-elect Trump isn’t nominating leaders, he is surrounding himself with unqualified fanboys and agents of chaos. Musk and Ramaswamy are making clear how they intend to use their power: denying people care and wreaking havoc on our public health system, of which Planned Parenthood is an integral part — all in the name of supposed ‘government efficiency.’
Some would dispute the idea that Planned Parenthood has anything to do with "public health."
McGill Johnson continued:
We’ve been here before — we are not new to shutdown and ‘defund’ fights. We fended off a number of these attacks during Trump’s first term — and Planned Parenthood health centers are still there serving millions of patients across the nation.
Clearly, Musk and Ramaswamy struck a nerve. The big question, going forward, is whether Musk and Ramaswamy will actually be able to carry out their objective. Time will tell, but they obviously believe they will be able to.
