Don Jr. accused of killing rare duck in Italy
Donald Trump Jr. is facing accusations of fowl play while on a hunting trip in Italy.
The president's eldest son is dismissing claims that he shot a rare, protected species of duck in Venice, as local left-wing politicians call for his prosecution.
Don Jr. seen with rare duck
A video shared from Don Jr.'s lifestyle brand, Field Ethos, shows him posing with several dead ducks after a shoot in Venice.
Don Jr. points out one unusual bird with orange-brown plumage, the ruddy shelduck.
"Is a rather uncommon bird in the area. I'm not even sure what it is," Trump says in the video.
The ruddy shelduck is rare in Italy, but the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the migratory bird as a species of "least concern."
Trump's team said it isn't clear who in Trump's hunting party even killed the bird - or if another group was responsible.
"While it's unclear whether this single duck was unintentionally shot by someone in Don's hunting group, another hunting group or killed in a different manner and retrieved by the groups hunting dog, Don takes following all rules, regulations and conservation on his hunts very seriously and plans on fully cooperating with any investigation," Trump's spokesperson Andy Surabian told the Daily Mail.
Who shot the bird?
A member of Trump's hunting party said there were eight men, and it is not possible to tell who shot which ducks.
"How it works – you're shooting as a group, and it's more of a team thing, where a group of ducks comes into the decoys, multiple hunters are shooting at the same ducks at the same time," the person said. "So nobody knows who shot that particular duck in question."
Trump is facing the wrath of environmentalist politicians like Andrea Zanoni, whose Green Party has already lodged a complaint with the Environmental Ministry.
While foreigners face strict regulations on hunting, there was nothing improper about Trump's duck hunt, according to Leone Rossi di Montelera, who runs a travel hunting outfit catering to foreigners called Italian Safari.
“Italian law allows the possibility for foreigners to hunt under strict guidelines. They have to have a valid hunting license in their home countries, and they must be sponsored by an authorized Italian hunting guide,” he told CNN. “There is nothing exclusive or abnormal about the duck hunt in question.”
Actor Stanley Tucci shot ducks in the same lagoon in an episode of his show Searching for Italy, as reported by Outdoor Life. Tucci's guide, Oliver Martini, appears in Don Jr.'s hunting video.
