Former President Donald Trump just vowed to end sanctuary cities.

Trump made the promise, according to Fox News, at a recently held campaign event in Wilmington, North Carolina.

For those less familiar with "sanctuary cities," CNN reports:

The term “sanctuary city” is a broad term applied to jurisdictions that have policies in place designed to limit cooperation with or involvement in federal immigration enforcement actions. Cities, counties and some states have a range of informal policies as well as actual laws that qualify as “sanctuary” positions.

In short, sanctuary cities are those that provide "sanctuary" or safe harbor for those who have entered the country illegally.

Trump's vow

In North Carolina, on Saturday, Trump announced a plan to put an end to these sanctuary cities.

"I'm announcing a new plan to end all sanctuary cities in North Carolina and all across our country," Trump said.

He went on to explain exactly how things will go should he win the 2024 presidential election.

He said:

As soon as I take office, we will immediately surge federal law enforcement to every city that is failing, which is a lot of them, to turn over criminal aliens. And we will hunt down, capture every single gang member, drug dealer, rapist, murderer, and migrant criminal that is being illegally harbored. We will send them home where they belong.

"I will ask Congress to pass a law outlawing sanctuary cities nationwide, and we will bring down the full weight of the federal government on any jurisdiction that refuses to cooperate with ICE," Trump added.

There's more

Trump has also vowed, as president, to deport all illegal immigrants.

Earlier this month, for example, Trump said, "We will do large deportations from Springfield, Ohio, large deportations. We're going to get these people out. We're bringing them back to Venezuela."

Polling has suggested that illegal immigration is one of the most important issues for voters in the 2024 presidential election. Trump is obviously well aware of this, for he has continued to hammer his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, on this subject.

Trump has repeatedly brought up the fact that President Joe Biden named Harris the "border czar," and he has argued that we ought to expect more of the same should Harris win.

Harris has sought to distance herself from the "border czar" term, claiming that she was never officially given this title. News reports from the time, however, would suggest otherwise.
