Former Democratic congressman facing more criminal charges than George Santos

Former New York Democratic Rep. George Santos made headlines last year when he was kicked out of Congress following a federal indictment.

Yet as Fox News recently noted, one former Democratic representative has received far less attention than Santos despite being hit with a greater number of charges.

Claims of wire fraud, money laundering, bank fraud, and campaign finance violations

According to the network, California Rep. Terrance John "T.J." Cox surrendered to FBI agents in August of 2022 to face 26 federal charges--five more than Santos is dealing with.

There are 15 counts of wire fraud, 11 counts of money laundering, one count of financial institution fraud, and one count of campaign contribution fraud.

In his 25-page indictment, prosecutors alleged that Cox absconded with $1.7 million over a period stretching between 2013 and 2018.

That includes soliciting a $100,000 loan for two of Cox's companies which the then-congressman ultimately failed to pay back.

Prosecutors have offered Cox a plea deal

"More than $40,000 of [the loan] was used for Cox's personal expenses, including private school tuition, credit card payments, mortgage payments and a $7,000 payment to Cox's private political consultant," the indictment read.

What's more, Cox is said to have orchestrated over $25,000 worth of illegal straw donations in 2018 by having his associates and family members reimbursed for their campaign contributions.

Yet another alleged scheme involved falsifying bank statements to fraudulently obtain a construction loan which Cox later defaulted on.

Fox News noted that Cox has been offered a plea deal and had been scheduled for a hearing on March 27. However, the date was rescheduled for May 22 owing to the "extremely voluminous" quantities of evidence that his attorneys must go over.

George Santos announced plans to run for office after State of the Union speech

Axios has reported that for his part, George Santos announced earlier this month he is planning to once again run for a seat in Congress.

"I just witnessed a weak, frail president deliver spin and lies to the American people from inside the chambers," Santos said in a social media post following President Joe Biden's State of the Union address.

"I have made several personal sacrifices in the name of serving the American people. My promise is that I will never back down because of my love for this country," the former lawmaker went on to add.

" A free people [claim] their rights, as derived from the laws of nature."
