Danielle Ballard, a former member of Louisiana State University's (LSU) women's basketball team, has died at the age of 29, Fox News reports

Ballard's passing is said by the Memphis Police Department to be the result of a "tragic accident."

The department has provided limited details about the circumstances of this accident.

The accident, according to the department, took place on Thursday, around 1:26 a.m., in Raleigh, Tennesee.

What we know so far:

People magazine reports:

The MPD told PEOPLE Ballard was on foot when the front end of a vehicle traveling southbound at the intersection of Coleman Road and Raleigh Lagrange Road struck her in the left lane of traffic.

Emergency personnel were then called to the scene, and Ballard was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. But, due to the injuries that she sustained from being struck by the vehicle, the hospital was unable to save Ballard - she was pronounced dead not long after arriving at the hospital.

According to the Memphis Police Department, the circumstance of the accident are currently being investigated.

The driver who struck Ballard is cooperating. The yet-unidentified individual remained at the scene of the crash after striking Ballard. And, at the time of this writing, no charges have been filed against this individual.

Remembering Ballard

Ballard played for the LSU Tigers during a stretch from 2012 to 2015. She was one of the team's top players.

Per LSU:

Ballard spent three years at LSU, earning first team All-SEC honors in 2015. She averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists during her LSU career. She earned SEC All-Freshman honors in 2013 and was twice named to the SEC All-Defensive Team.

Prior to college, Ballard, as a high school player, was ranked number 25 among female high school basketball players in the nation. She managed to lead her team - Memphis Central - to its first class 3A state title in nearly a century.

Ballard missed her final, senior season with LSU, according to Fox, "after being suspended by the program during parts of both her sophomore and junior years."

LSU released a statement following the news of Ballard's passing. The statement reads:

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Danielle. She meant a great deal to our program and was such a big part of our women’s basketball family. It’s difficult to understand why this happened to someone who was so full of life and had so much promise. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.
