California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced in February that she won't stand for reelection next year. However, a growing number of Democrats believe that she needs to go now.

According to the Washington Examiner, California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna is among those calling for Feinstein's resignation.

"We need to put the country ahead of personal loyalty"

"It’s time for [Sen. Feinstein] to resign," Khanna said in a tweet on Wednesday. "We need to put the country ahead of personal loyalty."

"While she has had a lifetime of public service, it is obvious she can no longer fulfill her duties. Not speaking out undermines our credibility as elected representatives of the people," he insisted.

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips offered a similar message, saying, "I agree with [Rep. Khanna] Senator Feinstein is a remarkable American whose contributions to our country are immeasurable."

Former Obama speech writer says Feinstein should step down

"But I believe it’s now a dereliction of duty to remain in the Senate and a dereliction of duty for those who agree to remain quiet," he added.

Those calls come in the wake of a similar demand from former Obama speechwriter and Crooked Media co-founder Jon Lovett.

"There’s been a lot of reporting about Dianne Feinstein no longer being fit to serve in the Senate representing the biggest state in this country," The Hill quoted Lovett as saying on his "Pod Save America" podcast.

He then pointed out that Feinstein's frequent absences from the Senate Judiciary Committee have made it "impossible" to confirm President Joe Biden's judicial nominees.

Feinstein's mental state said to be deteriorating

"And Dianne Feinstein should no longer be in the Senate. She has to resign and more people should be calling on her to resign," he declared.

Feinstein's mental condition has apparently been deteriorating for some time, a subject about which some of her colleagues spoke to the San Francisco Chronicle late last year.

"I have worked with her for a long time and long enough to know what she was like just a few years ago: always in command, always in charge, on top of the details, basically couldn’t resist a conversation where she was driving some bill or some idea," one unnamed Democratic lawmaker said before adding, "All of that is gone."
