In the wake of President Joe Biden's ouster from the 2024 presidential race, Democrats have scrambled to elevate Vice President Kamala Harris to the top of the ticket.

With her elevated status comes elevated criticism and scrutiny, and a series of moves made by her campaign in recent weeks had drawn plenty of both.

According to Fox News, Harris's campaign recently held a Zoom fundraising call targeted at a specific race, and has held similar calls with other specific races.

The most recent, called the "White Dudes for Harris" fundraising call, had critics questioning why the campaign is so focused on race, with some even suggesting it's a form of "segregation."

Campaign brushes it off

The event, geared toward white male voters, was by all measures a success, raising some $4 million in campaign cash.

But critics on social media had a much different view of what it was, noting that for a party bent on pushing diversity, the strategy seemed a bit hypocritical.

"The Kamala Harris campaign is bringing segregation back in style again," one X user wrote in response to the bizarre, whites-only event.

"There’s nothing more ‘progressive’ than self-loathing White guys with low self-esteem, man buns, and a gender studies degree from SUNY Binghamton thinking if they sign up for something as condescending as this that they’ll make their first Black female friend and maybe get a date. This qualifies as ‘trying too hard’ and is so desperate as to likely backfire," said Jason Rantz, a conservative radio host.

Harris campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz had a different view, noting that other campaigns have built fundraisers off of particular race demographics.

"I’m a bit confused. This is what campaigns do is build coalition groups. Latino Americans for Trump for example," Munoz said.

Social media reacts

Users across social media had a field day reacting to Harris's weird fundraising event.

"What is white? Is it even definable anymore? Cause evidently a woman can’t be defined either," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "I wonder how these beta’s would react to a 'White Men for Trump' group? All those “dude” cards have been officially revoked."

Only time will tell what the Harris campaign will do next.
