While Vice President Kamala Harris has long struggled with low approval numbers, a recent poll suggests that the problem has reached nightmare proportions.

Commissioned by NBC News and carried by Hart Research Associates/Public Opinion Strategies between June 16 and June 20, the survey found that 49% of registered voters have a negative opinion of Harris.

Worst number for a vice president in poll's history

Meanwhile, just 32% of respondents regard her positively. According to Axios, those are the worst numbers a vice president has ever gotten in the poll's history, with a net-negative rating of -17 points.

Democratic strategist Cornell Belcher attempted to attribute Harris' uniquely bad poll numbers as being due to her race and gender.

"[It] shouldn't surprise anyone that there is going to be a different filter and a different focus put on the first woman to ever be Vice President of the United States, particularly a woman of color," he told Axios.

The website noted that a poll from October of 2019 showed Harris' immediate predecessor, former Vice President Mike Pence, was only seen favorably by 34% of registered voters

However, Axios pointed out that Pence also had a lower negative rating, with 38% viewing him poorly. This gave the former vice president a net-negative rating of -4 points.

Voters who "strongly disapprove" of Biden far outnumber those who "strongly approve"

Meanwhile, then Vice President Joe Biden managed to achieve a net-positive rating of +1 points in December of 2010. While Biden was rated positively by 34% of registered voters and negatively by 33%.

Those figures are a long way from where Biden stands today, as the NBC News poll found that 53% of voters say they disapprove of how the president has handled his job whereas only 43% expressed approval.

The intensity of feelings differed among respondents: whereas 43% say they "strongly disapprove" of the way Biden operates, only 18% indicate that they "strongly approve."

What's more, the NBC News poll isn't the worst one to be published about Biden in recent weeks, as another survey from RMG Research put his disapproval rating at a whopping 58%.

Poll shows Trump beating Biden by two points

Also troubling for the president is a survey carried out last week by HarrisX for The Messanger which asked voters who they planned to support in 2024.

It found that Biden trails former President Donald Trump by two points, which was just outside the poll's 1.8% margin of error.
