Left-leaning fact-checker: Push to censor Hunter's laptop story came from the government

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced last week that the social media platform will end its use of fact-checking groups, arguing that they are politically biased.

Yet the head of one such organization recently claimed that pressure to suppress reporting on Hunter Biden's laptop actually came from the federal government.

Snopes CEO: "It was the government"

According to Fox News, that bombshell claim was put forward this past weekend by Chris Richmond, who serves as CEO of the left-leaning fact-check website Snopes.

"Let's look at the most famous example of Facebook censoring content, and that was the Hunter Biden laptop story," Fox News quoted Richmond as telling MSNBC host Ali Velshi on Saturday.

"And we say, well, it was fact-checkers, right, who told Zuckerberg to limit the reach of that? No, it was the government," Richmond continued.

"So, Facebook complied with the government, and then the fact-checkers get the blame," Snopes' head went on to declare.

Richmond says changes are happening because Trump won

What's more, Richmond went on to allege that Zuckerberg's change in policy had much more to do with the realities of electoral politics than any genuine convictions regarding free speech.

"If Kamala Harris would have won, would he be taking any of these same actions now? No," Richmond told Velshi. "He complied with what the government wanted then and is complying [with] what the new administration wants now."

However, Richmond did express support for Zuckerberg's plan to create a community notes feature similar to that used by X.

"I agree that the community note system is great. It should be transparent. The problem is that Facebook has this black box system that they can do what they want and just pass off the blame, like we want a more transparent system," Richmond stated.

"We should be pushing to community notes. But to say that you’re going to remove fact-checkers as part of the process, I think that’s where the issue is," he argued.

Zuckerberg says White House figures would "scream" and "curse"

Fox News recalled how during a recent interview with podcast host Joe Rogan, Zuckerberg said the Biden administration "pushed us super hard to take down things that were honestly, were true."

"I mean basically these people from the Biden administration would call up our team and like scream at them and curse," the social media tycoon asserted.

"Then, like, all these different agencies and branches of government basically just, like, started investigating and coming after our company," Zuckerberg maintained.
