Michelle Obama is not campaigning for Harris; many want to know why
Many are wondering why exactly it is that former First Lady Michelle Obama is not campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris.
This comes, according to the Daily Mail, as Obama's husband - former President Barack Obama - has hit the campaign trail for Harris, looking to stir up support for her in the final weeks leading up to the 2024 presidential election.
In contrast, the former first lady has been far less active than her husband.
As we will see, though, this does not mean that she is inactive.
Here's what is going on:
It was Politico that first reported recently that Barack Obama has decided to do some significant campaigning for Harris.
The outlet wrote:
The former president will appear Thursday at an event in the Pittsburgh area, the start of what will be part of a swing-state “blitz” through Election Day, said a senior campaign official, granted anonymity to discuss the schedule ahead of the announcement.
This so-called "blitz" is already underway, with Obama hitting the campaign trail on Thursday. In the process, he managed to stir up some serious controversy.
Obama is scheduled to continue holding rallies in battleground states through Election Day.
A spokesman for Obama said:
President Obama believes the stakes of this election could not be more consequential and that is why he is doing everything he can to help elect Vice President Harris, Governor Walz and Democrats across the country.
What about Michelle?
As stated, Michelle Obama has been far less active in terms of campaigning for Harris. She has not, however, been inactive.
First off, the former first lady gave Harris a big boost by speaking at the Democratic National Convention, where Harris was named the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. Many commentators argued that Obama's speech was the highlight of the entire event.
In addition to the convention speech, the Washington Examiner reports that the former first lady is working to mobilize voters, presumably for Harris. Per the outlet:
When We All Vote, launched in 2018 by Obama and a mix of celebrities and athletes, will be throwing around 500 early voting celebrations across the nation in the weeks leading up to the election.
We do not know exactly why Michelle Obama has been less willing to campaign for Harris than her husband has.
She has claimed, in the past, that she is not a big fan of politics, but her actions, including her speech at the convention and her voter mobilization efforts, would suggest otherwise.
