A man who technically resided in far-left progressive "Squad" member Rep. Ilhan Omar's (D-MN) congressional district in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is facing serious terrorism-related federal criminal charges.

The Justice Department announced charges on Friday against Harafa Hussein Abdi, 41, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Somalia who is alleged to have joined the Islamic State group, received military-type training at a camp in Somalia, and aided the terrorists' propaganda and recruitment efforts, the Daily Mail reported.

Abdi was recently transported back to the U.S. to face the charges after being captured and held in custody in the East African nation.

Charged with providing material support, receiving training from terrorist group

A DOJ press release on Friday revealed that Abdi has been charged with conspiring to provide and providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization as well as conspiring to receive and receiving military-type training from the same designated foreign terrorist organization, the Islamic State group, otherwise known as ISIS.

If convicted and given maximum sentences on all four counts, he could face up to 55 years in federal prison, including 40 years combined for the two material support charges and 15 years combined for the two terrorist training charges.

The press release noted that Abdi, who had threatened to carry out shooting and bombing attacks against New York City, faced an arraignment hearing before a federal magistrate judge in Manhattan on Friday.

Authorities speak out against Abdi

Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen of the DOJ's National Security Division said in a statement, "Mr. Abdi left his country to join ISIS, trained as a fighter, and actively aided the group’s propaganda efforts to spread its vile ideology."

The same was noted by New York U.S. Attorney Damien Williams, who said, "While training with ISIS fighters in Somalia, Abdi allegedly carried an AK-47, threatened to attack civilians in New York City, and encouraged others to carry out such attacks."

"Our law enforcement partners have relentlessly pursued this investigation to ensure the disruption of Abdi’s alleged plans to wage terror on our shores and bring Abdi to an American court to face justice," the prosecutor added. "No matter how long it takes, this office is steadfast in its commitment to investigate, disrupt, and prosecute terrorist threats against Americans."

Larissa Knapp, executive assistant director of the FBI's National Security Branch, repeated the same allegations against Abdi and said, "The FBI works tirelessly to protect the American people against acts of terrorism and will hold accountable all those who break our laws and endanger our citizens. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners both here and overseas to uncover and disrupt terrorist activity."

Timeline of Abdi's terrorist activities

Per the DOJ's release, Abdi left Minnesota and returned to Somalia in 2015 to join an ISIS camp in that country, where he received weapons and tactics training and worked in the terrorist group's "media" wing to help create and spread jihadist propaganda and recruitment videos, including one video in early 2017 in which he rapped about carrying out attacks against civilians in New York.

Abdi reportedly had a falling out with the group's leadership in 2017 and attempted to leave the camp but was imprisoned by ISIS. He later escaped from ISIS imprisonment and was on the run in East Africa only to subsequently be captured and held in custody by law enforcement authorities.

In interviews with FBI officials, Abdi reportedly admitted that he had joined the terrorist group, received weapons and tactics training at the camp, and identified himself in propaganda videos he helped film in which he promoted ISIS and urged other would-be jihadists to join the terror organization.

According to the Associated Press, Abdi was born in Somalia in 1982, moved to Minnesota in 1999, and received his naturalized U.S. citizenship in 2006.
