Poll shows sharp drop in support for Biden among African Americans

A recent poll commissioned by The New York Times and conducted by Siena College showed former President Donald Trump beating President Joe Biden in every battleground state except Wisconsin.

While Biden has lost support among all demographics, the poll found that he has seen a historic drop among African Americans.

Poll suggests a 14-point surge for Trump with black voters

According to the survey, Trump is backed by 22% of black voters in the six battleground states, a historic change if the figure is accurate.

An in-depth examination of 2020's election results by Pew Research found that the former president was supported by just 8% of African Americans.

The battleground poll comes two months after an earlier New York Times/Siena College poll which showed Democrats have been losing support among non-white voters in general for more than a decade, a fact that journalist Nate Cohen discussed in a Times op-ed piece.

"With more than a year to go until the election, there’s plenty of time for Mr. Biden to re-energize his former supporters," Cohen acknowledged.

"But," he added, "the possibility that his standing will remain beneath the already depressed levels of the last presidential election should not be discounted."

Congresswoman: "Perception is reality"

The Washington Examiner noted that some Democrats are struggling to explain the phenomenon, including Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett.

During an appearance this past weekend on CNN's "State of the Union," Crocket suggested that voters simply don't have a good grasp of the facts.

"Here's the deal. Perception is reality. And so when you look at the data provided in this poll, it talks about how people feel," Crockett said of the latest New York Times/Siena College survey.

"The facts may not align with their feelings"

"And when people decide whether they're going to the poll or not going to the poll, it's all about how you feel in that moment," Crockett said.

"And so while the facts may not align with their feelings, their feelings are dictating their reality. Their reality is that they feel better or they felt better when Trump was in office."

"We’ve got some very popular African American artists that are out here saying things like, 'Oh, I got checks when Trump was in office. I want those checks again,' not understanding that that really came from Congress," she added.
