Speaker Johnson calls for Biden's resignation

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is calling for Joe Biden to resign from the presidency.

Johnson did so, via his X account, on Sunday, shortly after Biden officially dropped out of the 2024 presidential election.

As we will see, Johnson is far from the only member of Congress calling upon Biden to step down.

"He is not fit to serve as President"

Johnson made the call for Harris to resign in a lengthy statement that he posted to his X account. In the statement, Johnson encourages Americans to take a closer look at Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election.

Johnson wrote:

At this unprecedented juncture in American history, we must be clear about what just happened. The Democrat Party forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election. Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed "party of democracy" has proven exactly the opposite.

The House speaker went on to make a few other points before he argued that Biden ought to resign the presidency.

"If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President," Johnson wrote.

He added, "[Biden] must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough."

He's not alone

The New York Post reports that Johnson is not alone in arguing that Biden ought to resign from the presidency. U.S. Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) - the man whom former President Donald Trump has chosen to be his running mate - has also argued as much.

"If Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign, how can he justify remaining President?" Vance asked.

He then went on to write, "Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief. There is no middle ground."

There is no indication about what Biden's intentions are going forward.

Interestingly, Fox News reports, "President Biden has not been seen publicly since a letter was released announcing that he would no longer seek re-election and is endorsing Vice President Harris to replace him as the Democrats' nominee."
