Trump accused of 'declining to offer the specifics' on how he would handle abortion

Former President Donald Trump spoke at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, D.C. this weekend, where he boasted of having been "the most pro-life president in American history."

However, one critic complained that details on what he would do about abortion if reelected were largely missing from his speech.

Left-wing writer claims Trump will "say whatever it takes"

Inae Oh serves as senior news and engagement editor at the pro-abortion Mother Jones, and in an op-ed published on Sunday, she accused the former president of being willing to "say whatever it takes to please the audience in front of him."

According to her, Trump is "repeating the same performance voters have witnessed since 2016," with remarks that "rang hollow when it came to any real policy."

"For every piece of bombast he threw at the fawning audience on Saturday, the former president ducked, declining to offer the specifics his rivals were eager to provide," she insisted.

Oh argued that this was an example of political opportunism on Trump's part since going into specifics would "open him up to attacks that he’s either too soft or extreme on an issue the GOP keeps fumbling."

Trump "was a critical player" in overturning Roe v. Wade

What's more, she said it "would render him unable to say in one month that Republicans are losing elections because of hardline abortion policies, only to declare, 'I was able to kill Roe v. Wade a few beats later."

This is not the first time Oh has leveled such allegations against Trump, as she wrote last month that his statements on the issue are designed "to please whoever happens to be in the room."

Still, she did acknowledge that the former president "correctly asserts that he was a critical player in removing the constitutional right to an abortion," something she says "should speak for itself."

Trump has gotten similar criticism from Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who earlier this month accused him of being "too soft" on abortion.

DeSantis "really surprised" over Trump's reaction to six-week abortion ban

The Hill reported that DeSantis was reacting to Trump's criticism of a bill he signed that bans abortion in his state after six weeks.

"I was really surprised, because he’s a Florida resident," the governor was quoted as telling CBN News host David Brody.

"I thought he would compliment the fact that we were able to do the heartbeat bill, which pro-lifers have wanted for a long time. He never complimented, never said anything about it then he was asked about it, and he said it was 'harsh,'" DeSantis complained.
