A New York City Police Department officer, Jonathan Diller, was tragically shot and killed on Monday by a career criminal during a traffic stop in Queens.

A wake will be held in Diller's honor on Thursday, and former President Donald Trump, who has long expressed his devoted support of the NYPD, is expected to be in attendance to pay his respects to the fallen officer, according to the Daily Mail.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden will also be in New York City on Thursday, not to express his condolences for the loss of the murdered patrolman but rather to attend a high-dollar, star-studded campaign fundraiser event with former Democratic Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Trump expected to attend wake honoring murdered NYPD officer

New York's WNBC reported that, according to a top spokesperson for the NYPD, it had been confirmed that former President Trump planned to attend Thursday's scheduled wake in honor of the late Officer Diller in his hometown of Massapequa on Long Island.

The fallen officer, a three-year veteran with the force who'd already received multiple recognitions for his exemplary service, will then be laid to rest on Saturday following a funeral mass at the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church.

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump wrote, "Our heartfelt prayers go out to the family of highly decorated NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, whose life was taken by a murderous career criminal yesterday during a traffic stop in Queens."

"The 'thug' in question has 21 prior arrests and just recently got out of prison -- he NEVER should have been let back out on the streets," the former president added. "

To Officer Diller’s family, and all of the other brave men and women of law enforcement who put your lives on the line every day, we love you, we appreciate you, and we will always stand with you!"

Suspected cop-killer had lengthy and violent criminal record

As was noted by former President Trump, the Daily Mail reported separately that the suspected killer of Officer Diller, Guy Rivera, 34, had a lengthy rap sheet that included nearly two dozen prior arrests and multiple stints in prison for a variety of crimes, including some that involved firearms and violence.

Rivera has at least 21 prior arrests on his record, with the most recent before this deadly incident being in April 2023 when he was picked up on a gun-related charge but was subsequently released back onto the streets on bail.

The career criminal's record also included multiple assault and drug-related charges, and Rivera served prison time at least twice for unspecified lengths of time, first in 2011 at the Southport Correctional Facility and then again in 2016 at New York's "supermax" Upstate Correctional Facility.

According to WNBC, Officer Diller and a partner approached an illegally parked car in Queens on Monday, during which Rivera, a passenger in the vehicle, initially refused Diller's order to exit the car and then opened fire on the officer, mortally striking him just below his bulletproof vest.

Diller's partner returned fire and wounded Rivera while Diller, despite being shot, managed to retrieve Rivera's dropped handgun before it could be used again. He later succumbed to his fatal wound at a hospital while both Rivera and the driver of the vehicle, another career criminal identified as Lindy Jones, were taken into custody and are awaiting charges.

Trump mourns fallen officer while Biden raises funds for his campaign

Meanwhile, as former President Trump goes to pay his respects to the fallen NYPD officer alongside Diller's grieving family members and colleagues on Thursday, President Biden will go to New York City as well as part of a major campaign fundraiser event that is expected to raise at least $25 million in support of his re-election bid, according to the Associated Press.

That event will feature a "conversation" between Presidents Biden, Obama, and Clinton moderated by late-night comedian Stephen Colbert as well as other speakers, several musical guests, and even an "afterparty" at Radio City Music Hall hosted by first lady Jill Biden and a DJ.
