Trump has been preparing to face off against Harris for weeks: report

Apparently, President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election came as no surprise to former President Donald Trump.

In fact, according to a new report from NBC News, Trump and his election team have been preparing to face off against Vice President Kamala Harris for weeks.

Per the outlet:

Donald Trump’s political team has been preparing to run against Vice President Kamala Harris for weeks, something it got one step closer to Sunday after President Joe Biden said he is dropping out of the race.

This, perhaps, helps to explain the rapid response that we have seen from Trump following Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 race.

Will it be Kamala?

At the time of this writing, the answer is unclear.

While it is true that many Democrats - including Biden and the Clintons - have already thrown their support behind Harris, two of the Democratic Party's leaders - namely, former President Barack Obama and U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) - have not.

Both Obama and Pelosi have released statements essentially praising Biden for his presidency and for his decision to drop out. But, noticeably, neither individual offered support for Harris.

In fact, Obama even went so far as to say this:

We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead. But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges.

Accordingly, it would appear that Harris does not have Obama's support.

Team Trump weighs in

Trump and his team, however, clearly seem to believe that Harris will end up being the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.

NBC, in its report, notes:

Last week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee came chock-full of attacks on Harris, while Trump’s speech accepting the nomination was written with no direct mentions of Biden; he ad-libbed just one mention of the president. During his 2020 speech accepting the Republican nomination, Biden’s name came up more than 40 times.

The outlet goes on to note that Trump and his team actually started focusing on Harris following Biden's poor performance at the first presidential debate.

NBC reports:

In the weeks after Biden’s disastrous late June debate performance, Republicans began fine-tuning a messaging strategy that places a heavy focus on Harris with the idea she would ultimately be the Democratic nominee.

Given all of this, there is no doubt about the idea that Trump believes Harris will be his opponent in the 2024 presidential election. We'll have to see if Trump turns out to be correct about this. As we know, he very often is.
