Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of President Donald Trump, has long been an avid hunter, much to the disdain and dismay of others who oppose that form of outdoor recreation.

Trump Jr. has been accused by environmentalist politicians in Italy of killing a protected species of duck during a hunting trip near Venice in December, and they are now demanding accountability, according to The Guardian.

The accusations stem from a video in which the president's son is seen standing near and commenting on the carcass of an unusually colored waterfowl that may be illegal to kill in Italy and other parts of Europe.

Trump Jr. accused of killing a protected duck

Per The Guardian, Trump Jr. traveled to Italy in December and took part in a duck hunt with others at a lagoon near Venice, with some of the day's activities included in a video that was posted online by his outdoors-themed company, Field Ethos.

In the video, he is seen shooting at ducks from a foxhole in the lagoon, and at one point is heard commenting on a distinctively colored rusty orange duck mixed among other dead birds.

"This is actually a rather uncommon duck for the area," Trump Jr. said. "Not even sure what it is in English, but incredible shoot."

Unfortunately for Trump Jr., it appears to some that the unusually colored duck is a migratory waterfowl known as a ruddy shelduck, which is rare but not endangered yet is still a protected species that is illegal to kill in Italy and much of southern Europe, where it breeds before wintering in south Asia.

Leftist Italian politicians seek retribution

The fact that Trump Jr. may have killed a protected species of duck has some leftist politicians in Italy flapping mad and demanding some form of justice and accountability for the president's son and anyone else who may have been involved in the hunt.

According to Politico, an Italian Green Party member of the Veneto regional assembly, Andrea Zanoni, said in a social media post, "The video shows Trump Jr. with a ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) in the foreground, a duck that is very rare in all of Europe and [is] protected by the EU Birds Directive and Italian law."

"The killing or holding of this animal is punishable by law," the politician added. "I have filed a question to expose the facts. Veneto and Italy are not the property of the U.S."

Zanoni was joined in being outraged by Green MP Luana Zanella, who filed a formal complaint with the environment ministry. Asked by the media about the allegations, Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said that he was "waiting for a report to know more and have all the information."

Trump Jr. denies any wrongdoing

The Associated Press reported that Zanoni and Zanella want authorities to take some sort of legal action against Trump Jr. and others who were involved in the hunt, including a suspension or revocation of licensing for the company that organized the dunk hunting excursion.

However, a spokesperson for Trump Jr. pushed back on the allegations of his responsibility for alleged wrongdoing and revealed that all of the appropriate permits to hunt in a legal area had been obtained, as well as that there were "there were countless other hunting groups present" in the same area.

"While it’s unclear whether this single duck was unintentionally shot by someone in Don’s hunting group, another hunting group, or killed in a different manner and retrieved by the group’s hunting dog, Don takes following all rules, regulations, and conservation on his hunts very seriously and plans on fully cooperating with any investigation," his spokesman said.
