Trump takes swipe at Special Counsel Smith's wife over Michelle Obama documentary panned by reviewers

It is no surprise that former President Donald Trump has been harshly critical of Special Counsel Jack Smith, but during a speech Tuesday night, Trump also took a swipe at Smith's wife, Breitbart reported.

Special Counsel Smith's wife is documentary filmmaker Katy Chevigny, who produced a special Netflix documentary in 2020 about former first lady Michelle Obama that was based on and shared a title with Obama's memoir "Becoming."

Trump derided that film as little more than a "puff piece" about the former first lady, but as it turns out, the description of the hagiography of Obama wasn't at all dissimilar from the terrible reviews that the documentary received from even left-leaning reviewers when it was first released three years ago.

"Raging and uncontrolled" Trump haters

Tuesday evening, just hours after he was arraigned in federal court in Miami, Florida, on felony criminal charges brought by Special Counsel Smith over his alleged mishandling of government documents, former President Trump delivered a defiant speech to supporters during a fundraiser event at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey.

At one point in his remarks, Trump began to complain about Smith -- who he has nicknamed "Deranged" -- and how biased and partisan the special counsel was, as well as his wife.

Trump said of Smith, "He’s a raging and uncontrolled Trump hater, as is his wife, who happened to be the producer of that Michelle Obama puff piece. This is the guy I’ve got."

Turns out, Trump was right

To be sure, there will be those who object to former President Trump taking a shot at Special Counsel Smith's wife -- certainly on the left, but also even some on the right -- and argue that the critique was uncalled for.

While the necessity or purpose of Trump's inclusion of Chevigny in his criticisms of Smith is definitely debatable, no legitimate issue can be taken with his lambasting of the "Becoming" documentary as a mere "puff piece" of the former first lady, as that pretty much aligns with what other reviewers all said in some form or fashion when the film was released in 2020.

Breitbart reported at that time that while the predominately left-leaning reviewers clearly had nothing but love for Michelle Obama, there was much left to be desired with regard to the Netflix documentary produced by Chevigny that followed the former first lady along on a book tour to promote her new memoir.

Documentary received poor reviews

IndieWire gave the film a C+ rating and described it as a "bland" and "paper-thin exploration of a remarkable life in transition" that, in actuality, was just an "unfocused collection of concepts that could all inspire their own films."

Time magazine was a bit nicer but still deemed it to be an unnecessary "hagiography" of someone who "deserves so much more than the worshipful glassy gaze of this documentary."

The New York Times suggested the film was too "routine" and "stagy" and not the sort of thing that Obama fans had hoped for, while the New York Post's Vulture described it as too "guarded" and "self-celebratory" and for failing at "laying the groundwork" for future bigger things for the "adored" subject.
