Trump to suspend security clearances of 51 intel officials who signed laptop letter
To say President Donald Trump isn't messing around now that he's in office a second time would be a massive understatement.
Among hundreds of executive orders planned in his first days in office, Trump, according to the New York Post, is set to suspend the security clearances of the 51 current and former intelligence officials who swore that Hunter Biden's laptop was a hoax.
The infamous statement signed by the 51 officials concluded that the laptop story had the "earmarks" of a Russian disinformation campaign, which proved to be outright false, if not an intentional lie.
Many believe the officials signed the letter in an effort to protect then-President Joe Biden and his family members, especially Hunter Biden, from the fallout that ensued.
Trump makes the move
A senior Trump administration official broke the news of Trump's intentions to suspend the security clearances to Fox News.
A lawyer who represents at least seven of the signatories of the infamous letter claims that it was simply interpreted incorrectly.
"It served as nothing more than a warning letter of what we have known for decades: certain foreign governments — including Russia — continue to try and actively interfere in our domestic affairs and our guard must remain vigilant," the attorney said.
Fox News noted:
Despite the fact that the claims suggested in this letter were never corroborated, many of its signatories went on to become frequent contributors to cable news networks, oftentimes using their positions of authority to further bash Trump
Some of the better known names who signed the letter included James Clapper, former Director of National Intelligence.
Former CIA Director John Brennan also signed the letter. Both men were frequent contributors on liberal cable news networks.
Fox News added:
Brennan appears regularly on MSNBC as a senior national security analyst and has used his platform to attack Trump on more than one occasion. In a Feb. 2024 appearance on the network, Brennan claimed that Russia is using Republican politicians "as tools."
Social media reacts
There were plenty of reactions to Trump's vow to suspend their security clearances, with many cheering him on for doing so.
"It needs to go further, their pensions need to be revoked," one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, "Raid their homes and make sure they have not retained any classified documents."
