President Joe Biden will pressure China's Xi Jinping to reopen military communications with the U.S. at a summit ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum next week.

Axios reported that China has indicated readiness to resume the communications after suspending them when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visited Taiwan, which China considers its territory but much of the rest of the world considers sovereign.

The Chinese are signaling that they will resume military-to-military communications, which is significant," said Bonnie Glaser, the managing director of the Indo-Pacific Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. "It's a key priority for the Pentagon."

"But it remains to be seen whether they are willing to take meaningful steps to reduce the risk of accidents or discuss ways to preserve strategic stability," she said.

Tensions high

The meeting between the two powers will take place in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday, with the forum starting on Saturday.

Tensions have been high between the two countries following Pelosi's Taiwan visit as well as the U.S. decision to shoot down a Chinese spy balloon that flew over large swaths of the U.S. including a major military installation in January and February.

Xi is also expected to meet with other top U.S. officials in the area prior to attending the forum, discussing reopening communications and other issues.

The Chinese leader has not been to the U.S. since 2017, when he met with then-President Donald Trump.

Criticism will come

China is one of the nations from which Biden family members received payouts in which Biden was allegedly involved, so Biden is likely to receive criticism no matter how he handles things with Xi.

His alleged corruption makes it difficult to judge whether he is acting in the best interest of the nation he leads, or whether he is showing preferential treatment to China or doing them undue favors.

It doesn't help that Biden just seems to be bad at his job, but how much of that is due to the favors he may have promised?

This is why most leaders accused of that kind of corruption have in the past resigned from their positions.

To be fair, in today's day and age there is such rampant dishonesty that political opponents may use such allegations to discredit their enemies and get them removed, so there is more of a move to fight back rather than resign.

This has certainly happened to former President Donald Trump, and it seems like Biden is using this dynamic to hide his own alleged wrongdoing.
